IS COUNSELING FOR YOU?…

Are you feeling depressed, grief, lonely or hopeless?  Do you spend a lot of time thinking over and over about your worries, fears, and what bad things may happen?  Maybe, a significant relationship seems to only consist of arguments and conflict.  Are you a parent that is constantly worried about your teen’s isolation, school performance, anger, anxiety or just plain lack of being happy?  Are these things getting in the way of daily functioning?  If you answered yes to several of these questions…

YOU ARE NOT ALONE

These are common questions and feelings for most people to have at some point in their life.  For example: 3 out of 5 adults experience depression in their lifetime.  For teens: 8 out of 10 will have serious depression.  40 million adults are effected by anxiety.

Realizing that your day to day life is not where you want it to be is a very important step for improving your situation.

THE NEXT STEP IS TO FIND A PATH TO APPROACH THE PROBLEM

  1. Visit your Primary Care Physician to get help and resources.
  2. Ask a trusted spouse/friend/family member who knows you and you can trust: “Have you noticed a change in me recently.”
  3. Do some research on-line to explore your counselors and their expertise in your area.
  4. Call Young Counseling Services at the number listed to set up an appointment in Victor or Canandaigua.  We also offer a free phone/text consult to help you find the right professional in your area.

YOU MAY BE THINKING

1. Will counseling really help? How successful is anxiety treatment or counseling for depression, couples issues, or teen problems?

This is a common response for people thinking about therapy.  I know because many of the people completing therapy with me say something like:

“I really was skeptical of this whole counseling thing, but it wasn’t what I thought it would be.  I feel so much better and have made many improvements.  I wish I would have done this month ago to avoid all that pain I went through.”

In addition, the field of therapy has recently developed “evidence-based practice” which has increased success rates:  For example: A study showed by using evidence-based treatment with teens,

in a 36-week trial ,82 percent of participants had improved and 59 percent had reached full remission (they eliminate symptoms all together) … In addition, 91 percent of participants showed no evidence of suicidal thinking or behavior.” (1)

The APA (American Psychological Association) reports:

“In most cases anxiety disorder can be treated successfully by appropriately trained mental health professionals… Through cognitive therapy, patients learn to understand how their thoughts contribute to the symptoms of anxiety disorders, and how to change those thought patterns to reduce the likelihood of occurrence and the intensity of reaction. Along with psychotherapy, appropriate medications may have a role in treatment.”

2.  Money is tight and I cannot afford it.

That may be the case if you have a large deductible/copay or no insurance.  However, I take most major insurances.  If your insurance plan pays very little or you have no insurance plan, I’d like to work with you to help you access counseling.  If we cannot work out an arrangement, I know low or no-cost alternatives.  I also can point you in the right direction for a one-on-one insurance assessment to research a insurance plan tailored to your needs.  My goal is to get you the help you need when you need it before things get worse, with me or with someone else.  Mental health problems are too painful or potentially dangerous to leave untreated.

WHAT WILL YOU FIND UNIQUE ABOUT ME?

Often the people I work with tell me they feel understood and heard.  They say they c0me away with effective tools to address their specific issue.  Each person has a unique therapy plan to addresses their own identified needs.  See the Professional Testimony in the right hand column, written by a colleague, as an example of what is unique about me.

Professional Testimony

“In my work with Jeff, I found him to be very personable, professional and understanding. I always feel that my patients get exceptional care when they see him.  His clients always tell me how comfortable they are working with him and how they feel he truly listens to them to help them overcome the obstacles they are facing. The patients I send his way often come back with a smile on their face to tell me how excited they are to see him again. He helps instill a sense of confidence in his patients that allows them to take the reins in their recovery. Jeff is always a pleasure to work with and I have always been happy with the results I see in our mutual patients.”
